About Judge Wilters
Bob Wilters has been a law professional for over 35 years, and has served as a judge in Baldwin County for over 22 years. He began his career in law as an attorney in a private law practice in 1980 before moving on to serve as a Special Agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) from 1982 – 1986. In September 1986, he began serving as Chief Assistant District Attorney for Baldwin County until Governor Guy Hunt appointed him District Court Judge in January 1993. During his tenure as District Court Judge, Wilters started the first Drug Court for District Court.
In January 1995, Wilters was elected to a full term in District Court. In January 1999, he was elected to Circuit Court, and has held the office since. He was elected as Presiding Circuit Court Judge in January 2013, from which he recently retired on June 5 of this year.
In October 2007, Wilters started the Drug Court in Baldwin County, which resulted in 240 graduates, 70 reoffenders, and a 70% success rate. In 2012, it was selected as the best Drug Court in the state.
“Starting Baldwin County’s Drug Court in October of 2007 has been the highlight of my professional career,” said Wilters. “Helping those in need put their lives back together, reuniting families and helping to make this a better place to live has been priceless.”
Wilters is a lifelong resident of Baldwin County, born and raised in Bay Minette. A Baldwin County High School graduate, he went on to earn his undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama, Majoring in History with a Minor in English. He then went on to graduate from Cumberland School of Law at Samford University. As a law and business professional, he is a member of the North Baldwin, Central Baldwin and Eastern Shore Chambers of Commerce as well as the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber; Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI, South Alabama Chapter; Baldwin County and Alabama Bar Associations; and the Alabama Circuit Judges Association. He is also in the community, serving as a member of the Optimist Club of Perdido Bay, the University of Alabama Alumni Association Baldwin County Chapter and a member of the Executive Committee for the Boy Scouts of America, Mobile Council. Wilters was also a former Chairman of the Church Council, former Sunday School teacher and a Youth Mission Trip volunteer for the Gulf Shores United Methodist Church.
Wilters is a devoted husband of 32 years to Amelia Cox Wilters and proud father of two children. Daughter, Blaire Baxter, is an Educational Coordinator Director for Clinton Nature Center in Clinton, MS, and son, Stone Wilters, is a Navy Corpsman currently training with Marine Recon at Camp Pendleton in California.
“It has been an honor to serve the people of Baldwin County. I am proud of what we have accomplished for these past 22 years,” says Wilters. “However, when you see a problem with the leadership in the District Attorney’s office, you either ignore the problem or you take action. I choose to take action! My choice is to bring Integrity, Competency and Credibility to the office of District Attorney.”
